![]() This review was conducted on an Xbox One, using a copy provided by the publisher. You can pick up the entire season of Life is Strange: Before the Storm now for $16.99 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Steam. Despite this, the story, gameplay, art and music all come together to form what is another wonderful display of Deck Nine's skill. Life is Strange: Before the Storm Episode 2 is a great continuation of the new narrative, but it doesn't quite match the excellence of the pilot episode due to some flawed pacing and a bit of poorly-written humor. Final thoughts on Life is Strange: Before the Storm Episode 2 These moments are, sadly, a bit immersion breaking, but thankfully they are rare. I wish there was an option to pick specific chapters in the episode like one can do in Telltale games. Darius must make a difficult choice to save Sammy and Yasmina. So that would mean I would have to play the whole game completely again to get to the ending. Some of the jokes are extremely cringe-worthy, and I seriously doubt any real person would ever even think to say them. I wanted to replay the game from a certain point to see how things change but i can only restart an entire episode. The only criticism I have here is that every once in a while, a character spouts a line of comedy that is as far from comedic as possible. During an epic night at an old mill watching her favorite band, Firewalk, perform, Chloe gets into trouble with two men after spilling beer on one of them. the dialogue writing and voice acting are both on point as well. 'Awake' is the first episode of Life is Strange: Before the Storm. Thanks to the excellence of both, the setting of Arcadia Bay feels very authentic. Sadly, though, as with episode one, there's not as much to explore as there was in the original Life is Strange.Īs expected, Before the Storm continues to perfectly craft its world through a gorgeous score and Life is Strange's trademark pastel-like art style. Finding a towel in the middle of a junkyard seems like a chore, but once you check out everything there is to find and learn about this universe, it'll be worth it. One of the tasks is to find a towel to cover a ripped backseat. For example, there's a part in the episode where Chloe is trying to fix up a car's interior. ![]() The tasks that you accomplish in order to progress the story feel mundane at first, but they give you an excuse to venture around the setting of the scenes. I'd venture to say that they are some of the most thought-provoking choices I've seen in this genre in a long time.Īside from choice-making, the main form of gameplay in Before the Storm lies in exploring and accomplishing small objectives. ![]() We could also see a few of the results from the previous episode built into this episode, though relatively minor in the grand scheme of things.Unlike the narrative itself, the gameplay in Before the Storm's second episode remains just as satisfying as it was in the first. This serves as a reminder that real life has real consequences- it’s the price we have to pay. While some plot points provide only an illusion of agency, there are still some significant branching choices players must make. Chloe is put into some tough situations where there just isn’t an obvious right and wrong answer. The choices in the second episode of Before the Storm are even tougher than the last, really hitting that moral grey area that the Life is Strange series is so keen on. Chloe’s involvement with her drug dealer Frank’s criminal activities is certainly a driving plot element that provides action and suspense, as well as tough decisions that feel truly important. Some seem important, like Chloe and her mom, while her strange friendship with Eliot seems more like filler than anything. The intertwining of the school’s rendition of The Tempest with the girls’ relationship was brilliantly executed.ĭespite its slow start, the episode is filled with drama, romance, comedy, and action – Before the Storm features a number of different subplots and relationships involving Chloe.
